the core of our nursery program.
There are some special characteristics of plant distributing system to increase the survival rate. Plants are freely distributed only to the organizations which are eligible to ensure a high survival rate. We won’t gift plants to individuals. We’ve surveyed that the most of the plants given to individuals don’t survive due to either carelessness or inept maintenance of the individuals.
Another attribute of the nursery is that it’s free from any chemical fertilizer. We self-produce our composted manure with fallen leaves and twigs collected from in and around. Some other nutrients are outsourced from organic inputs. We have a plan to distribute the compost manure to the roadside urban trees which are suffering from malnutrition as the propagation against the use of chemical fertilizer.
With the days of our prolonged fortitude we have gained rapid popularity in more and more schools, colleges universities, local NGOs, reputed clubs, residential complexes and hospitals. Off and on new invitation reaches us to be associated for green-healing works. The number of our associates crosses hundred this year.

Our struggling days
MOTHER EARTH FOUNDATION is an environmental and non profit and non-trading organisation registered under the Society Act XXVI of 1961.
The foundation is established on the auspicious Earth day of 22nd April in the year of 2009 with a motto of multifaceted social activities towards the benefit of the world mass without profit motive
The organisation started its activity on the World Environment Day of 5th June 2009. DR. S P Ganchowdhury, then Director West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency, along with four other eminent dignitaries and scientists inaugurated its environmental work by planting five indigenous plants at the Energy Education Park in Kolkata.
In the year of 2010 the organisation achieved the Certification of Registration of societies West Bengal.
In the same year the organisation observed the first anniversary of plantation programme at the open campus of EZCC. Govt. of India with the kind support of then Director Jayana Sthanapati.
In 2010 on the World Environment Day the organisation first started its yearly plantation programme at the open ground of Science City under the auspices of then Director Arijit Dutta Chowdhury. Until date the organisation regularly arranges a plantation programme on 5thJune followed by a Environmental Quiz and a cultural programme to celebrate the day.
In the same year one more milestone event was started on 26th September as VIDYASAGAR INTERSCHOOL ENVIRONMENT QUIZ on the birth day of the historic scholar, social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, the torch bearer of 18th century in India. In 2019 the jubilant 10th year of the quiz programme was celebrated on the same day in IPER auditorium with the participation of ten schools. It is a programme meant not only for the premier schools but also a lot of under privileged schools around. During ten years different schools from all layers of the society have participated in this programme.
In 2011 the foundation initiated the landmark programme which never postulated the city before i.e. A J C BOSE INTERCLUB ENVIRONMENT QUIZ. It is an environmental event specifically designed to create awareness among the premier clubs of Kolkata. The event date is set on 30thNovember every year to celebrate the birth anniversary of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose the widely recognised physicist, mystic and civic reformer.
This year in order to spread the awareness of plantation among the school students the organisation started two types of plantation programme either of them is unique of its kind named as PLANT ADOPTION AND PLANTATION WORKSHOP.
Plant adoption- the word is heard hither and thither in recent days. Here it implements something else. It is a novel concept to bring the youths in the purview of environmental awareness.
Very small saplings less than two inches are offered to the school students, without any charge, to rear up for one year by their own effort. The saplings are to be preserved compulsorily inside the campus. Neither students nor staffs are allowed to bring them out of the campus as an essential condition. Having been nurtured by the students under the authentic guidance of the teachers or gardeners, at the end of the contract the school authority responsively brings back the plants to the nursery. We find exceptional success in plants’ survival so far as a result of the school’s sincere dedication. Later these plants are preserved for ultimate plantation.
Plantation Workshop- Another unique of its kind concept introduced by the foundation for the school and college students same year. In this project the young hearts get a wide chance to work by hand to plantation and maintenance of trees.
It is a network to teach the students the basic steps of plantation, so that they can fill the unutilised area at their surroundings by their self sufficiency. In this workshop the students are guided to clean the land, prepare soil, mix manure and plant trees scientifically.
In the theoretical Part: The workshop starts with an introductory lecture demonstration by any professor or scientist regarding the procedure of planting. The lecture covers the classification of soil and strategy of plantation according to the kind of land and type of the tree.
In the practical Part: Students make pit, prepare soil with fertiliser and pesticide, plant the saplings and water them.
Saplings, tools and all other miscellaneous items are supplied by the foundation. Not to mention that it is also a charge free project for the institutions.
In 2013 MOTHER EARTH FOUNDATION got own space to run their individual nursery under the auspices of Kolkata Municipal Corporation to breed seedlings and develop plants. In 2020 the number of plants reaches more than five thousand.
This year another landmark event was started which is rapidly extending every year in various layers of society is EARTH FARE. The fare was hosted in Lake area of Ballygunge. The fare is a compilation of only biodegradable commodities, chemical-free food products, alternative energy households and other various kind of recycled products.
Earth Fare is not an event but a concept that any Institution, Club, NGO or Department can organise at their site. We are ready to assist and coordinate the source materials. Already several schools, colleges, clubs and NGOs started Earth Fare as a yearly schedule in association with us. Worth mentioning that every year more people are being involved in the matter.
Last year observed the eighth year celebration on 23rdFebruary, 2020 at Triangular Park, Rash Bihari Avenue.
From this year on our awareness activity got a new dimension as INDIAN OIL CORPORATION LTD links the MOTHER EARTH FOUNDATION with their month-long annual programme of oil & gas conservation (previously known as OGCF and recently named SAKSHAM).
We associate thousands of school students in month-long variety projects on oil & gas conservation. Cycle Rally is the salient part of the spectrum among all other programmes. For the first three years (2013 to 2015) Rally was organised at Nabadwip, the heritage town of West Bengal. In the recent years it is conducted in the industrial township of Kalyani.
Other activities include seminar sit and draw and cultural performances.
In 2014 MOTHER EARTH FOUNDATION is attached with the unique programme of Govt. of India ‘Swachh Bharat Pakhawada’ to work together with SCIENCE CITY and INDIAN OIL CORPORATION LTD.
‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ (SBA) or Clean India Mission was a nation-wide campaign from 2014 to 2019 to clean up the streets, roads and infrastructure of cities, towns, and rural areas.
The campaign's official name is ‘Swachh Bharat Pakhawada’ in Hindi and translates to "Clean India Mission" in English. The campaign was officially launched on 2 October 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi by the Govt. of India. It is India's largest cleanliness drive to date.
As per the directive of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas Govt. of India, PSU oil industries a wide range of activities to focus public attention on issues of petroleum conservation and environment protection. As an associate Mother Earth Foundation organises a cycle rally sit and draw competition. Quiz debate, and cleanliness drive in the schools with a special attention to the ones. Foundation also hosts one act plays street drama and skits earlier.
From 2018 our Plantation network has been extended to a new dimension. We have initiated Large Scale Plantation work in waste land of a city or its suburb region. It also takes account of Roadside gardening and beautification work. On the other side the survival rate of our planted of saplings has unbelievably risen to above 90% through our developed strategy. Apart of improved input materials used in the time of planting our strategy includes involving more people in maintenance of the plants. As a part of the Project we have covered a damaged island of Ballygunge Lake with one hundred twenty trees in association with Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, Govt. of West Bengal popularly known as KMDA.
